What is EMAN, Who are we?

EMAN stands for Excel Martial Arts Network.

It was founded by Shamsuddin Ramli a.k.a Sam Dean in the year 2004. We are a group of instructors who have collaborated to build an ITF Taekwon-do society as a mechanism for our teenagers and others in the surrounding society. We hope to build a society who are united, disciplined, well-mannered, and successful socially and economically.

We name our academy as a "network" because we want to be able to network and cooperate with all martial arts, not just ITF Taekwon-do. Networking is important to us because we will be able to share with other successful martial arts academies our thoughts, ideas, experience and expertise in all martial arts, especially Taekwon-Do.

We are striving to make Taekwon-Do ITF as part of the lifestyle of the society, especially the teenagers, even though we do not have much support from any organization or authority. Teenagers are our future assets for the nation. So we, the instructors, feel that we have the obligation to build healthier teenagers and make them more interested in participating in sports.

For those who are interested in joining us to develop this academy, you may contact adib@emandojang.com.

What is a Dojang?

Dojang is a term used in Korean martial arts that refers to a formal training hall. It is typically considered the formal gathering place for students of a martial art to conduct training, examinations and other related encounters.

Do (道) means 'the way' or 'art'
Jang (場) means 'a place'.

Which makes dojang the place where one practices the way. In the case of martial arts it is the place where one practices the path of that martial art, much like Dojo in Japanese. More specific terms such as "hapkidojang" or "taekwondojang" can be used for particular subtypes of dojang.

The dojang walls can be decorated with all kinds of things ranging from the national and federation flag to pictures and calligraphy and boards with the names of techniques practiced in the dojang on it. In general Korean dojangs are usually heavily decorated which might give some visitors a bit of a messy impression.

In dojangs where arts are practiced which require a lot of falling, there will usually be a mat on the floor. In older days the floor could also be covered with the sacks rice was stored in, but in modern days there are a variety of mats available.

At the beginning of class, students will line up according to their rank—the highest-ranking students at the front right and the lowest-ranking students at the back left.

The Korean word for gym is more commonly translated as Che Yuk Gwan (체육관), which means 'sports place'. Dojang refers to the actual place in the gym where practice takes place.

The equivalent Japanese term for "dojang" is "dōjō" (道場), T
he Chinese equivalent is Wu Guan (武館), which means "place of fighting."

What is Taekwon-Do?

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art and the national sport of South Korea.

In Korean, tae (태, 跆) means "to strike or break with foot"
kwon (권, 拳) means "to strike or break with fist"
and do (도, 道) means "way," "method," or "art".

Thus, taekwondo may be loosely translated as "the way of the foot and fist" or "the way of kicking and punching."

Taekwondo is the world's most popular martial art in terms of the number of practitioners Its popularity has resulted in the varied development of the martial art into several domains: as with many other arts, it combines combat techniques, self-defense, sport, exercise, meditation, and philosophy. Taekwondo is also used by the South Korean military as part of its training.

Formally, there are two main styles of taekwondo. One comes from the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF). The other comes from the World Taekwon-Do Federation (WTF).

International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) is a taekwondo organization founded on March 22, 1966, by General Choi Hong Hi (최홍희) in Seoul, South Korea. The ITF exists to promote and encourage the growth of the Korean martial art of taekwondo. Its main functions are to coordinate and approve tournaments and seminars, set standards for teaching (patterns, sparring, destruction), collaborate with affiliated member organizations, and service members in regards to rank and certifications.
